Nene Park Golf Club 2015 Open & 6 Month Presentation Night

On the 2nd August 2015, Nene Park Golf Club hosted probably the biggest men’s singles open in the region.

Proudly sponsored by Robinsons Motor Group and Peterborough Golf Repairs, there were 132 entrants competing over 3 handicap divisions for the titles of Open Champion.   Not only were the competitors shooting for the title, but there was also a £10,000 hole-in-one prize on the 1st hole for everyone who made one.  8.28am saw the first ball struck, and by the time the final putt was sunk at 7.30pm, the winners were known.

Michael Hinch (nett 69) took the 0-9 handicap title, John Gribble (nett 70) took the 19-28 handicap title and an impressive nett 66 from local golfer Richard Elliott won the 10-18 handicap division by 1 shot.

Richard, a Nene Park Golf Club member for a number of years, was asked how he felt about winning the Open and the round he played replied “Total shock at being able to hold a complete round together as I have been very inconsistent of late as the members I play with regularly can confirm. To do it in the Open is even more of a shock but very satisfying”

With a prize table and trophies of over £1,600, the presentation was exciting with most of the entrants attending.

Chris Naylor, club captain of Nene Park Golf Club said “I expected this to be a good day with the number of entries, but I had not idea it would be this good. With the sun shining but gusting winds, conditions were tricky but the course was in immaculate condition which helped the scoring.”

“I’ve had such a great response from everyone who entered; next year’s Open has already been planned for Sunday 31st July 2016. The only concern I have is that we may have too many players wanting to play. Who knows, we may have to split the field and play over 2 days!”

The Nene Park Golf Club 6 month presentation took place after the Open presentation with a 100 or so members attending.

With new competition sponsors, new trophies and over £3,000 paid out in prize money, the evening was a great success.

“We are a bit different to most clubs at Nene Park Golf Club” Chris Naylor said. “We have made a lot of changes over the past 12 months and have seen a 30% rise in membership which has led to a higher standard of golf being played. The new sponsors and prize money has also made people try that much harder to improve their golf and we are seeing a lot more members playing in competitions”

“Everyone associated with this club is ecstatic with what is happening. With the decline in golf memberships around the country, Nene Park Golf Club is bucking the trend. We have new members joining daily and every one of them is keen to get out there on the course and compete.”
